WBNX-TV (1985)

WBNX-TV signed on the air on December 1, 1985, as a family-oriented independent station; it was founded by the Winston Broadcasting Network, a secular for-profit licensee owned by locally based Ernest Angley Ministries, which purchased fellow televangelist Rex Humbard's television production facilities in Cuyahoga Falls to serve as the station’s studios. (Angley's religious talk/variety show The 90 and 9 Club aired twice daily for most of its existence under Winston ownership.)

In September 1994, WBNX acquired the local rights to Fox Kids, after former CBS affiliate WJW declined to carry the children’s programming block upon replacing WOIO as the area’s Fox affiliate through an agreement with WJW’s then-owner, New World Communications, in addition to acquiring a few syndicated programs displaced from the two stations.

WBNX-TV (1997)

On September 1, 1997, WBNX-TV took over as the Cleveland-area affiliate of The WB, assuming the local rights from WUAB (which had been a dual WB/UPN affiliate since both networks launched in January 1995, and would remain with UPN for the remainder of that network’s existence). With Kids' WB programming being added to WBNX’s schedule, alongside Fox Kids and syndicated children’s programs, promotions for channel 55’s children’s programming branded it as "Cleveland's Kids Superstation" to emphasize the station’s extensive inventory.

WBNX became a charter affiliate of The CW (the successor to both The WB and UPN) on September 18, 2006.

2018–2022[]

WBNX-TV (2018)

On July 11, 2018, Raycom Media and CBS Corporation announced that WUAB would become the new CW affiliate for the Cleveland area effective July 16.

WBNX-TV became an independent station four days later on July 15, 2018, the station replaced CW daytime and prime time shows with a mix of first-run and off-network syndicated programming, and the One Magnificent Morning block on Saturdays with a mix of syndicated drama, how-to and educational children's programs; WUAB assumed the market's CW affiliation the following day, while continuing to carry MyNetworkTV programming in late nights. However, this affiliation switch is planned to be reverted this fall, as WBNX-TV will become a CW O&O on September 1, 2025.
