1995–1999[]
WCW Monday Nitro started on September 4, 1995 to compete against WWF's Raw, a period known as the "Monday Night Wars." Both shows were neck to neck in the ratings in late 1995 through early 1996. But in the summer of 1996, with the rise of the nWo faction, Nitro defeated Raw in the ratings for the next 83 weeks. In response, WWF launched the Attitude Era in late 1997, putting them on top.
In the ratings, both shows were swinging back and forth in 1998, during the second wrestling boom period. Come January 4, 1999, nearly 500,000 Nitro viewers turned to see Mick Foley take his first title on Raw, right after the infamous "Fingerpoke of Doom." From there, WWF took the lead again.
1999–2001[]
In early 2001, WWF bought out WCW. The final Nitro aired on March 26, 2001, featuring a "Night of Champions" as well as a Sting-Ric Flair match.
