On July 22, 1978, WWJ-TV changed its callsign to the current WDIV-TV after then-owner Evening News Association traded the station to Post-Newsweek Stations for WTOP-TV in Washington, D.C. out of concerns that the FCC forbade TV and radio stations in the same market but with different ownership groups from sharing the same callsigns.
