WEAU-TV (the "-TV" suffix would be dropped on October 1, 2012) first signed on the air on December 17, 1953 as a primary NBC affiliate on VHF channel 13, owned by the Central Broadcasting Company. Morgan Murphy Media and also included the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram along with WEAU radio (790 AM now WEAQ at 1150 AM, and 94.1 FM now WIAL).

In December 2023, WEAU dropped the NBC peacock alongside all other Gray-owned NBC stations in which WEAU became 13 News.
