WEWS-TV originally first signed on the air on December 17, 1947 on VHF channel 5, as the first television station in the state of Ohio and the sixteenth in the United States. The Station has been owned-and-operated by The E.W. Scripps Company since its inception. It was also formerly a primary CBS affiliate until Storer-owned WJW-TV (VHF channel 8) used its influence to land the affiliation there in place of DuMont and ABC, which later affiliated with channel 5.
