The station signed on during March 1985 as an independent station known as WFCT. The station was originally licensed to Fayetteville and was owned by Fayetteville/Cumberland Telecasters. In 1989, the station relayed then-NBC affiliate WPTF-TV (channel 28, currently a MyNetworkTV affiliate as WRDC) as it tower collapsed in an ice storm.

In 1994, the station became a Fox affiliate, serving areas where its then-affiliate WLFL (channel 22, currently a CW affiliate) couldn't reach properly.
