In 1985, TVX Broadcasting purchased the station. In 1987, the station became the area's charter Fox affiliate.

WLFL was sold with the rest of TVX to Paramount Stations Group in 1991. The station was then sold to Sinclair Broadcast Group in 1994, but it remained a Fox affiliate.

In 1998, the station became the area's affiliate for The WB after it's charter Raleigh affiliate, WRAZ took over Fox.
