The station signed on January 25, 1966 as WCMC-TV as an NBC affiliate, serving areas where KYW-TV (channel 3, now a CBS owned-and-operated station) could not reach. The station was owned by Jersey Cape Broadcasting, alongside WCMC radio (1230 AM and 100.7 FM, now WZXL). By this time, the network began sharing with channel 3's signal.

In 1977, channel 40 was sold to South Jersey Radio and began relaying a direct NBC feed, without having to rely on channel 3. Around this period, a stylized "40" logo was introduced which would also be used by ABC affiliate WWSB in Sarasota in 1982.

On April 12, 1984, the station was renamed to WMGM-TV to match co-owned WMGM radio.

In 2013, WMGM was sold to LocusPoint Networks. WMGM lost its NBC affiliation on December 31, 2014 after a long dispute between NBCUniversal and Access.1. The rights to air NBC programming in South Jersey would be gained exclusively by O&O WCAU (channel 10), which NBC purchased in 1995 as part of a trade deal with CBS.

Under a time-brokerage agreemne with Advantage Broadcasting, local programming returned to the station in 2016, but that attempt was short-lived as the station was sold to Univision Communications a year later.
