WOIO was first launched on May 19, 1985, as an independent station; it became one of the original charter Fox affiliates on October 9, 1986. The station’s original die-cut/script logo was one of a few television station logos that rendered the channel number as a word, rather than a number as is custom. This was the also the only logo used by the station as both an independent and Fox station; it was kept during the station's early months as a CBS affiliate.
On August 18, 1994, then-owner Malrite Communications entered into a local marketing agreement with Cannell Communications to assume operational control of then-Cannell-owned WUAB. Just two weeks later on September 3, WOIO switched network affiliations from Fox to CBS; this sent the area's Fox affiliation to former CBS affiliate WJW, which joined the network as part of a broader affiliation agreement with its then-owner, New World Communications.
This logo’s introduction―replacing the original 1985 logo―on February 5, 1995, coincided with the station launching daily evening newscasts, utilizing the resources of WUAB's existing news department, from WOIO/WUAB‘s new shared facility at Reserve Square in Downtown Cleveland.

This logo, along with the WUAB logo of the same period, continued to be used on the station's Doppler radar tower on I-71 in Brunswick until it was demolished in late 2015–early 2016.
