The station was launched on October 2, 1955 as a ABC affiliate and was originally owned by the Greater Huntington Theater Corporation. After only a year, the station was sold to Cowles Communications.

In 2000, Gateway merged with SJL Broadcasting. In 2002, SJL sold the station to West Virginia Media. On November 17, 2015, Nexstar Broadcasting Group announced that it would acquire the West Virginia Media stations, including WOWK-TV for $130 million. Nexstar began operation the stations under a time brokerage agreement in December of that same year. The sale of the license assets was completed on January 31, 2017.
