Originally signed on the air on January 1, 1955 as WEAT-TV, a primary ABC affiliate on VHF channel 12 owned by RKO General.
On January 27, 1974, the WEAT calls were changed to the current WPEC which stood for the Photo Electronics Corporation in reference to the station's then-current owner, a company founded by local entrepreneur Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr..
On January 1, 1989, WPEC was forced to switch its affiliation from ABC to CBS in order to compensate for the fact that WCIX (which had switched from Fox to CBS as part of the 1989 South Florida affiliation switch) had a weaker signal north of Miami that the other Miami television stations.
