On January 27, 1974, the WEAT calls were changed to the current WPEC which stood for the Photo Electronics Corporation in reference to the station's then-current owner, a company founded by local entrepreneur Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr..

On January 1, 1989, WPEC was forced to switch its affiliation from ABC to CBS in order to compensate for the fact that WCIX (which had switched from Fox to CBS as part of the 1989 South Florida affiliation switch) had a weaker signal north of Miami that the other Miami television stations. And ABC signed on as WPBF in Tequesta, And WTVX becomes an independent station.

WPEC CBS12 solid calls

The Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired channel 12 from Freedom Communications on November 2, 2011 alongside Fort Pierce-licensed CW affiliate WTVX from Four Points Media Group, resulting in the first full duopoly in West Palm Beach.
