The station signed on the air on October 15, 1953 on channel 56 as WARD-TV and was originally a CBS affiliate (the network was also affiliated with WFBG-TV (channel 10, now known as WTAJ-TV which signed on seven months prior)) but also carried ABC programs on a secondary basis. The station was originally owned by Central Broadcasting through its Rivoli Realty division alongside WARD radio (now known as WNTJ and WJHT).

On July 27, 1996, channel 19 was re-activated by Venture Technologies Group under the call-signs WTWB-TV and became a full-power relay of then-WB affiliate WBPA-LP (then on channel 29, now on channel 12 as WBPA-LD and currently a Rev'n affiliate). In 1997, Venture moved the channel's license to Jeannette.

In January 1998, WNPA would become a UPN affiliate after the network's original affiliate in Pittsburgh, WPTT-TV (now WPNT) became an affiliate of The WB as part of a greater deal between the network and WPTT's owners, Sinclair Broadcast Group. The station would be purchased by the Paramount Stations Group in December of that same year making WNPA a UPN O&O. In 2000, after Paramount's parent company Viacom purchased CBS Corporation, WNPA became a sister station to CBS O&O KDKA-TV.

In 2023, CBS announced that WPCW and all of their affiliated CW stations would drop the network and revert back to their independent status that September. WPCW changed its call letters to WPKD-TV[1] and rebranded as KDKA+[2] on September 1, 2023 at midnight in order to distance itself from The CW and strengthen its ties to sister station KDKA-TV.
