WKTR-TV[]
1967–January 1970, August 1970-1971[]
The original channel 16 signed on March 20, 1967 as an independent station titled WKTR-TV and was owned by the Kittyhawk Broadcasting Corporation. In 1968, negotiations with ABC (which was affiliated with WKEF, channel 22 at that time) were held over a possible sale of channel 16, the sale was initiated on February 13, 1969 pending FCC approval. In 1971, the station was shuttered and its license & frequency remained vacant.
January–August 1970[]
On November 21, 1969, the station announced that it would become an ABC affiliate which occured on January 1970. The announced was met with legal action from WKEF which led to a bribing scandal that led to the affiliation being terminated on August of that year.

On April 24, 1972, channel 16 returned to the air as a PBS station owned by the Ohio Educational Television Network Commission. In 1975, the station was sold to the University Regional Broadcasting, owners of WMUB-TV (channel 14, now WPTO) in Oxford.

On March 1, 1977, channel 16 became WPTD.
