The station signed on September 1, 1957 as WFGA-TV. It was affiliated with NBC but carried ABC programs on a secondary basis and was originally owned by the Florida-Georgia Television Company.

On December 16, 1971, the station changed its call letters to WTLV. San Antonio-based Harte-Hanks Communications purchased channel 12 in 1975.

On March 31, 1980, WTLV and WJKS swapped network affiliation affiliations, with channel 12 taking the then highest-rated ABC and channel 17 taking the then low-rated NBC.

The Gannett Company purchased WTLV and sister station WFMY-TV in Greensboro, North Carolina from Harte-Hanks in December 1987, which was completed in February 1988.
