WSPD-TV became WTVG on October 1, 1979. The station kept its 1977 logo, albeit unlined.

In October 1995, WTVG changed its affiliation from NBC to ABC following its acquisition by the latter network's parent company, Capital Cities/ABC (which merged with The Walt Disney Company the following year) from SJL Broadcasting, the NBC affiliation moved to WNWO-TV.
