On January 1, 1989, WTVX was disaffiliated from CBS after the network chose WPEC as its new affiliate in order to compensate for the fact that WCIX (which had switched from Fox to CBS as part of the 1989 South Florida affiliation switch) had a weaker signal north of Miami than the rest of the other stations in the area and ABC chose to affiliate to then-newly launched WPBF. Thus, WTVX became an independent station.

In 1995, WTVX became West Palm Beach's UPN affiliate. Straightline Communications acquired the station in 1997, separating it from WPBF (which was sold to Hearst-Argyle Television). Viacom's Paramount Stations Group (now CBS Television Stations) would operate the station under a local marketing agreement. In 2001, Viacom acquired WTVX outright.
