After running only news updates throughout the broadcast day since its sign-on, WUAB launched an in-house news department on January 4, 1988, with the premiere of The Ten O'Clock News, the first prime time newscast attempted in the Cleveland market since WKBF-TV's attempt failed in 1970. Though marred by technical problems, the newscast doubled WUAB's ratings in the 10:00 p.m. timeslot compared to the previous week.
Weekend editions of The Ten O'Clock News were added in September 1989, and the 15-minute sports segments featured at the tail end of the newscast (originally anchored primarily by former WEWS-TV sportscaster Gib Shanley) were restructured as a standalone sports wrap-up show (titled Sports Extra) in September 1993.

WUAB introduced new on-air graphics and music for its newscasts on February 5, 1995, coinciding with the expansion of its news department ― under the banner Cleveland Television News — to produce newscasts for sister station WOIO, which had switched from Fox to CBS in December 1994. Both stations began operating from a combined facility at Reserve Square; while WOIO's newscasts originated from the newsroom with anchors walking to reporters in a style heavily inspired by CITY-TV's CityPulse broadcasts, WUAB continued to originate its newscasts from a traditional set.
