In 1980, United Television (then a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox at the time) purchased WRBT from Rush. In 1981, United sold its station to Vetter Communications when 20th Century Fox sold its stake in United to BHC Communications (itself a subsidiary of Chris-Craft Industries).

On November 26, 1987, after building a higher and more powerful tower that boosted its signal to a full five million watts, WRBT became WVLA and abandoned its Helvetica Bold 33 in favor of this circle 33.
