WCGV-TV launched as an independent television station on March 24, 1980.

The Fox affiliation moved from WCGV to then-CBS affiliate WITI in 1994, following a deal with New World Communications. WCGV became independent again until it became one of the charter UPN affiliates on January 16, 1995.

WCGV's owner, Sinclair Broadcast Group, successfully sold the station's UHF broadcast spectrum in 2017. On January 8, 2018, WCGV's signal was shut down, with its programming and virtual channel position (24) moving to a subchannel of sister station WVTV.
