Waltons was formed on November 1, 1953 by the merger of four Australian retailers: Murdoch's, Ltd., Stone's Home Furnishing Pty., Ltd., Rosenstengels Pty., Ltd., and Amalgamated Furnishing Company. It was named for the head of the partnership, John R. Walton. The first Waltons-branded stores opened later that month. On August 16, 1955, American department store company Sears, Roebuck, and Co. bought a massive share of Waltons.
