Time Warner was first founded in January 1990 as a result of the merger of Time Inc. and Warner Communications. The company's original identity was created by Chermayeff & Geismar, and included an eye-ear logo designed by Steff Geissbuhler, which was adopted for and is still used by Time Warner Cable.

In April 1993, the eye-ear logo was replaced by a more reserved and traditional serif wordmark, created by Anspach Grossman Portugal.

AOL Time Warner

In early 2000, Time Warner and AOL announced that they would merge, with the deal finalized in January 2001. The company became known as AOL Time Warner as a result, with a logo similar to the previous one. Landor Associates was responsible for designing this logo. The color of two horizontal lines were changed from black to grey.

Time Warner (second era)

TimeWarner 2004

In November 2002, AOL Time Warner dropped "AOL" from its name and reverted to Time Warner. It alternated with the AOL Time Warner name until October 2003, when the company name was officially and legally reverted back to Time Warner. However, they did not reverted back to either the 1990 or 1993 Time Warner logos, opting for a new design which rendered the name as TimeWarner. This logo also drops the two horizontal lines located above and below the company name. The color of the logo is the only one that remains unchanged, as it retains the blue color from the AOL Time Warner logo. This was later used on bylines underneath the logos of its subsidiaries, with the words "A" and "Company" in MS Trebuchet font (however, there are some exceptions, such as the Cartoon Network Productions which still uses the Times New Roman font for the byline before they introduced the 2016 logo in which it also removes the byline and the Cartoon Network Studios, which used to have a 2003 byline but it was removed later on).

"The new logo signals this is not the same company it was as the old Time Warner. We wanted it to be forward looking without coming up with some logo that had symbols or fireworks shooting out of it." –Time Warner's Senior Vice President Edward Adler, October 2003

Lippincott Mercer was hired to created the new corporate identity.[3]

On October 22, 2016, AT&T announced its intent to acquire Time Warner for $85 billion.[4]
