Weingarten's was acquired by Grand Union in January 1980. It adopted a new logotype matching the recently adopted one of its new parent, and dropped the 's from its name. Most of the last Weingarten stores were acquired by Safeway on January 14, 1984, with the rest going to Randalls and Gerland's Food Fair.
