In 2016, Western New York Flash's NWSL franchise was purchased by North Carolina FC. The team moved to Cary, North Carolina and rebranded as North Carolina Courage.
On March 7, 2017, Western New York Flash announced it was joining United Women's Soccer. In 2018, the main team folded. The team currently exists as a youth academy team in the Elite Clubs National League.
