In 2002 Wimbledon FC, backed by celebrity music producer and Pop Idol judge Pete Waterman, proposed a move to the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes in a bid to revive the club's fortunes. Despite being opposed by the FA and the Football League, an independent FA commission in 2003 authorised the move by 3 to 2. Milton Keynes Dons was then founded, yet fans who were not so willing to drive 55 miles to see a match set up AFC Wimbledon as a 'pheonix club'. MK Dons did not lay claim to Wimbledon FC's history or medals (though legally they are the same team), which were handed back to Merton Borough Council before being claimed by AFC Wimbledon.
