Windows Embedded Automotive was first released on December 4, 1998, as Windows CE Auto PC. It was initially designed specifically for Clarion's AutoPC in-car entertainment device.[1]

On October 16, 2000, Windows CE Auto PC was rebranded as Windows CE for Automotive.[2][3]
2001–2002[]
Windows Automotive[]
2002–2005[]
On October 21, 2002, Windows CE for Automotive was rebranded to Windows Automotive[4]
2005–2010[]
Version 5.0 was released in 2005.
2008–2010[]
In 2008, Microsoft unveiled Microsoft Auto, the name of their middleware and development platform for Windows Automotive applications and configurations.[5]
Windows Embedded Automotive[]
Windows Embedded Automotive 7 (2010–2021)[]
On October 19, 2010, Windows Automotive was rebranded to Windows Embedded Automotive.[6] Windows Embedded Automotive 7 is the last version and is unsupported by March 1, 2021.[7]
