Groove would replace the Windows Media Guide after June 30, 2016.

Microsoft shut down its premium music streaming service, Groove Music Pass on December 31, 2017. However, Groove Music does function as a music player that plays offline music files.

In November 2021, Microsoft announced the addition of video playback functionality to Groove Music, and with it the rebranding of the app to Media Player. The Preview version was released first on Windows Insider Program on Dev Channel in November 2021, and then later in Beta and Release Preview channels on February 3, 2022. The final version became available to the Stable build of Windows 11 in February 15, 2022. This app was originally only available to Windows 11 users but in December 2022, it became available to Windows 10 users.

Movies & TV and Windows Media Player Legacy will co-exist together with the new Media Player.

In 2024, it was rebranded as "Windows Media Player".
