In November 1969, Woolworths opened its first hypermarket at Booval near Ipswich, Queensland under the Big W name. A second one would open in 1970 in Indooroopilly, Brisbane under the name Woolworths Family Centre. The concept would sadly underperform, and the hypermarkets were re-established as separated Woolworths Supermarkets and Big W discount stores in the late 1970s and 1980s.
