Woolworths Variety Store originated as Woolworths Stupendous Bargain Basement which opened on 5 December 1924 in Sydney's Pitt Street Imperial Arcade. Its first Melbourne variety store would open in 1933. During the 1980s their variety stores would face increasing competition from other discount chains such as Kmart, Target, and The Reject Shop.
In 1989, the last of the Woolworths Variety Stores ceased operations as part of a strategic shift by the company to focus on different retail sectors. Although, some variety stores continued to operate into the nineties.
