In 1993, the Yokohama Taiyo Whales originally intended to be renamed as Yokohama Whales, but they were renamed as Yokohama BayStars due to the whaling restrictions being enacted in Japan and some superstitious fans thinking that dead whales brought bad luck to the team, especially given that Maruha Corporation, previously known as Taiyo Fishery Company, was also known for its whale meat products. The team was intially meant to be named as Yokohama Bay Stars (as in "Yokohama Bay Bridge"), but the team was refered as BayStars.
In 2002, Maruha Corporation was sold to TBS Holdings
